Write a scene where your main character goes to a fun fair or theme park. Where would he/she go? Would they have a good time or not? What rides (if any) would they prefer to go on? Who would they be most likely to go with?
For something more difficult, take the cotton candy away from the scene and see if you can turn it into a little more sinister!
Do you plan ahead? Is your cupboard stocked with all kinds of canned/dried foods? Are your Christmas presents bought and your cards wrote ready for mailing? Perhaps you’ve already booked your summer holiday for 2003? Or will you be rushing around last minute wondering if you’ve missed the last mailing date before the Holidays - and hoping for a last minute bargain at a beach resort? Are you a perfect planner - or do you thrive on the adrenalin-rush brought on by a last minute panic? Start with the words "planning ahead is something I .." And write from there.
Your exercise today is to incorporate all of the following words into an article, short story, poem or whatever comes to mind. You must use all of the words (in any order) to complete the exercise, but the context in which they are used is up to you. Think about the words for a few minutes before you start to write and see what pictures come to mind - then see if you can weave them all together into a piece of writing.
Make a list of things that currently bring pleasure into your life. Read through the list and then write about the one that brings you the most happiness.
1. Bethy opened the package eagerly. She’d waited a long time for ….
2. Stirring the pot slowly, Jez wondered again how he had got into….
3. The body lay on the floor. Threatening even in death. ….

Make a list of the books on your main character’s bookshelf and then see if the reading material fits the character. What could someone who doesn’t know your character as well as you do learn from seeing what kind of book your character enjoys? Which is your character’s favourite book, and is there any book that has impacted his/her life in any way, and if so - how.
Write a letter to the hero in your life. This could be someone you know, or perhaps even related to - or it could even be someone no longer living, someone you’ve never even met, but someone who has had a great impact on your life in a positive way. Write a letter telling them why they are your hero.

Think of the word "Silence" and then write about how this makes you feel. Do you find silence to be comforting, or threatening? Is it something you long for in your life, or would you fear it if you encountered it. Start your page with "To me, silence is …" and write on from there.
