Your protagonist gets unexpected houseguests in the shape of either old friends, or family. How does he/she react, reschedule and adjust to this disturbance in their life. Write a scene and see what happens.

Watches, clocks, or kitchen timers at the ready for this morning’s timed exercise.

Wednesday, October 8th, 2003

Put the title “From Tiny Seeds do Might Oak Trees Grow” at the top of your page, set your timer for 20 minutes and then start. Keep the writing going until your timer goes off. Fiction, non-fiction, personal memory - it doesn’t matter. Whatever the title brings to mind, write it down. When you timed session is over, read through what you’ve wrote - maybe there’s the start of a new work in progress there, or the bones of an article just needing some meat on it!

Another weave-a-word challenge for your creative muse to mull over.

Your exercise today is to incorporate all of the following words into an article, short story, poem or whatever comes to mind. You must use all of the words (in any order) to complete the exercise, but the context in which they are used is up to you. Think about the words for a few minutes before you start to write and see what pictures come to mind - then see if you can weave them all together into a piece of writing.

An exercise for fiction writers this morning.

Describe what your protagonist believes to be their highest personal achievement. Why is this more important to them than anything else they have accomplished in their lives to date? For a greater challenge, write this in first person so that your character actually talks about their success.

Can you write to a given specification? Try this morning’s exercise and see how you do.
